Fire and Evacuation Assessments are a legal requirement in the UK under the Fire Safety Act 2021, and since 2005 the responsibility of evacuating people safely rests with the owner or manager of the premises, not with the emergency services. If you are responsible for a building or property, you must carry out an assessment to identify and assess potential fire hazards and evacuation needs. This includes putting measures in place that reduce the risk of injury or death during an emergency.

Our initial assessment will look at the legal requirements of the organisation or building owner, identifying any products, training or maintenance required to meet with Government regulations.
We can then make recommendations and suggest appropriate training for members of your staff (such as fire marshal or evacuation chair training) and identify any need for evacuation equipment, including where to keep it.
If a full fire and evacuation assessment is required we can arrange a site visit and conduct a full Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) or deliver an evacuation plan in conjunction with the site’s current Fire Safety Plan.

Government legislation requires employers and service providers to make provision for the safe evacuation of disabled people from its premises. If your business falls short of making this provision, this may be viewed as discrimination and can also constitute a failure to comply with the requirements of fire safety legislation.
Fire evacuation assessments are about people, not buildings
You may have heard the term Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan or PEEP. This refers to the arrangements an organisation makes to ensure an individual’s physical or mental abilities do not prevent their safe exit from your premises, or the efficient evacuation of all occupants.
If you have a responsibility for the premises or its occupants, then you must ensure a PEEP is generated for every person with a disability that may affect their ability to respond to an emergency. And remember, some disabilities are invisible. A PEEP is therefore an important measure that outlines the adjustments necessary for maintaining their personal safety.
Similarly, a Generic Emergency Evacuation Plan (GEEP) includes information about the building’s layout, evacuation procedures, any evacuation equipment available, as well as communication devices.
