Fire, toxic spill, gas leak or the threat of a terrorist attack; there are many reasons a building may need to be evacuated quickly. And if you have a responsibility for the property, it’s your duty to ensure the premises are evacuated as quickly and safely as possible.
Under your watch, staff, customers or patients with special mobility needs must be able to evacuate the premises swiftly and efficiently, aided by designated staff and, where appropriate, dedicated equipment.
Evacuation equipment such as chairs, mats, sledges and sheets are only ever as good as the people who deploy them. As the business that purchased this equipment, you must ensure the staff tasked with using it are trained to do so.
Remember: if you have Evacuation equipment or are considering purchasing it, you will need to provide training on the equipment as required by Government legislation

Evacuation chair training for familiarity and confidence
Our training is specific to the type of chair being used and designed with the operators and recipients in mind. Evacuation chairs are built to help convey vulnerable people up or downstairs, and are constructed specifically to remove lifting and carrying from the process. If you find you are doing the lifting and carrying, then your technique may be wrong.
We recommend, where appropriate, that staff with special mobility needs gain experience in the use of specialised equipment. Our evacuation chairs are designed first and foremost with the safety and stability of the passenger in mind. However, the process of being moved in an evacuation chair can be a stressful experience for both the operators and the person being moved, even if the conditions are being replicated. Practice sessions can help build confidence in both the chair’s design and the proficiency of the operators tasked with using it.
Designated operators have a duty of care to ensure both the equipment and their knowledge remains fit for purpose, and must carry out refresher training and hands-on practice in between certified courses at a minimum of every six months.
